Innovate Motorsports MTX-L Gauge System Install - Digital Air/Fuel Gauge |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
As the world that is our Mustang hobby continues to evolve and the methods by which we improve ’Stangs’ engine performance become more dynamic, monitoring the mixture of air and fuel has mandatory status. While we admit we’re guilty of making a big deal about an engine’s air/fuel ratio, we certainly won’t apologize for preaching that type of gospel, as the air/fuel value is critical to dialing-in maximum performance. 1986 Ford Mustang T-Top LX Project T-Top Coupe Engine Swap - To The Top |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
Despite its age, our ’86 T-top LX coupe arguably is the headliner in our stout lineup of project Mustangs. How can this be, you ask, when 5.0&SF’s stable of bitchin’ Ponies is also comprised of Project Vapor Trail, an F-1C ProCharged New Edge, and contributor Sharad Raldiris’ Project Shocker, just to name a few? may 2011

Ford Mustang Fuel Rail Wraps - Tech Inspection |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
This month's Tech Inspection highlights our brief study on thermodynamics, or the study of energy conversion between heat and mechanical work, and subsequently its macroscopic variable-temperature. Your tech editor and Saul "The Surgeon" Gutierrez of Extreme Automotive had an opportunity to check out an interesting and potential new fuel-rail insulation product from Aeromotive and Heatshield Products of Valley Center, California. 2008 Ford Shelby GT500 Exhaust Test - Now We're Kookin' |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
In this exercise, we're looking at the changes that adding a complete long-tube header system and 3-inch exhaust will make on Sean Roberts' '08 Shelby GT500. Unlike many Shelby GT500 owners, Sean passed on going the systematic route of adding bolt-ons in step-by-step fashion (save for a post-catalytic exhaust that was installed shortly after buying the car), and instead went straight for the gusto, by bolting Vortech's massive, new 3.3-liter huffer on top of his 'Stang's otherwise stock 5.4, as the car's first performance mod. That's some first bolt-on. July 2010

Installing AEM's Wideband Air/Fuel Gauge - Analog Air/Fuel Gauge |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
AEM's wideband air/fuel gauge is easy to install, easy to read, and accurate within' 0.1 AFR, thanks to the included Bosch wideband O2 sensor.
Saul "The Surgeon" Gutierrez of Extreme Automotive put the pieces in place for this quick exercise (as you'll see in the accompanying photos). Any mechanically adept 'Stangbanger can do the same right in the driveway, provided a welder is handy for installing the included bung for the sensor. November 2009

1999 Mustang Affordable Uprades - Two-Valve Bolt-Ons |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
Quite frankly, factory-fresh '99-'04 Mustangs now bring the same level of excitement to us that stone-stock Fox 'Stangs used to bring. Consider it a slight changing of the guard, if you will, but the reality is more so that when one lake dries up (finding a bone-stock '86-'93 GT or LX is increasingly more difficult), another one, Lake New Edge, is stocked and ready for 'Stangbangers to cast their lines and go fishin'. 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
Cold-air-intake systems arguably have been the most popular bolt-on upgrades for S197 ('05-present) Mustangs since the cars became available nearly five years ago. It's amazing how quickly time has passed. June 2009

While we'd love to take credit for being so clairvoyant that we simply know exactly which products-new or old-5.0 Mustang & Super Fords readers want to learn more about each month here in Tech Inspection, the truth is that the hard-core-and even the softer-core-'Stang gear featured in this section of the magazine oftentimes is determined by our readers. S197 Mustang Suspension Upgrades - Balancing Act |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
If you approach the Mustang hobby from the same perspective that we do, horsepower undoubtedly reigns supreme as the most important characteristic for modified 'Stangs. Of course, that's not saying we don't recognize, understand or appreciate the other traits, as we know they're also important attributes of a Pony's overall performance in some way, shape, or form. However, where making big steam (at the rear wheels) is the top-tier quality for a 'Stang of any year, having a chassis and suspension that helps make driving a wild Pony easier is horsepower's closest ally. This is especially true of cars that are driven daily, and more-than-occasionally in a spirited manner. A mega-boosted or nitrous-gulping Mustang isn't worth a darn if it drives like a high-powered plow wagon. September 2009

Shelby Mustang GT500 Performance Parts - Five Times The Fun |
5.0 Mustang & Super Fords |
|
The word simple is one of the most relative terms a magazine editor can use when describing the installation of parts for late-model Mustangs. Yes, there are often occasions when mags are stone-cold guilty of calling an install simple, without taking into account the fact that a project's degree of difficulty may actually depend on the skill and ability of the person doing the work. Rest assured, we try to weigh all the variables associated with putting parts on Mustangs before we start talking about how simple it is. What might be easy for one enthusiast could be a nightmare for another. December 2008
